PESHAWAR: Peshawar High Court has granted bail to a woman arrested on charges of hanging her teenage daughter to death.

A single-member bench of Justice Sahibzada Asadullah accepted a petition filed by the suspect on condition of furnishing two sureties of Rs100,000 each. The petitioner was arrested on Sept 21 and an FIR was registered against her under sections 302 and 311 of Pakistan Penal Code.

The occurrence had gone viral on social media, showing multiple video clips of the petitioner moving around along with her deceased daughter. Police claimed that they received information that a female had been found hanging from a tree near Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar.

The police official concerned claimed when they reached the spot, they found the petitioner present there. Upon inquiry, he said, the petitioner admitted that the deceased girl was her daughter and she had come to know about her alleged illicit relations with someone resulting in her pregnancy.

He claimed that owing to perceived disgrace, the petitioner had brought her daughter to the place of occurrence and, with her consent, hanged her.

Barrister Mohammad Hassan Adil appeared for the petitioner and stated that the prosecution’s own version raised a serious question regarding the petitioner’s alleged commission of the offence.

He argued that the prosecution assertion that the petitioner alone carried out the act, in the circumstances narrated, required careful scrutiny.

The bench observed that the alleged disclosure attributed to the petitioner couldn’t, without examining its admissibility and corroboration by independent evidence, be treated as conclusive proof of her guilt.
