KARACHI, July 30: The National Database & Registration Authority has clarified a newsitem on the proposed system of Vehicle Management and Identification, and said it is in the extreme interest of the people.

Referring to a newsitem “Nadra Tracking System Termed Impracticable” published on

July 18, a Nadra press release said the newsitem was misleading as revenue generated through issuance of VIN Tag system would be utilized for equipment, infrastructure development, pay/incentives of employees, etc, and no pocketed by Nadra as claimed in the report.

It compared the satellite-based tracking system with Nadra’s proposed system of vehicles management and identification, and said the Nadra’s system was cost effective and it would have a one time cost of Rs1,200 per motor vehicle and Rs350 per motorcycle with no monthly operating expenses.

It said the VMIS uses Radio Frequency Identification Device which contrary to the report is the fastest growing technology for identification and management of vehicles, trucks, containers (land and ship based).

It is also in use in passports, identity cards, credit cards, driving licences, etc. Toll collection is only one of the many usages of RFID technology.

It may be pointed out that the Dawn story was based on deliberations of a meeting held at the Sindh Chief Minister’s House and attended by top ranking officials of the Sindh government, the police department, Nadra, and the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee, who had expressed reservations over Nadra’s proposed system.
