ACCORDING to the weekly statement of position of all scheduled banks for the week ended July 15, 2006, deposits and other accounts of the scheduled banks stood at Rs2,808.818 billion, smaller by Rs12.572 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs2,821.390 billon.

Commercial banks deposits showed a decline of Rs12.568 billion over the week to Rs2,795.995 billion against preceding week’s Rs2,808.563 billion, and of specialized banks it fell by Rs0.006 billion to Rs12.822 billion, over previous week’s Rs12.828 billion.

Borrowings by all scheduled banks decreased during the week over preceding week’s figure. It fell to Rs352.756 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs354.888 billion, a fall of Rs2.132 billion. This was primarily due to a decline in the borrowings by commercial banks, which declined to Rs269.653 billion against previous week’s Rs271.805 billion, or by Rs2.152 billion, while borrowings by specialised banks stood at Rs83.104 billion.

Gross advances stood at Rs2,165.700 billion in the week under review, a rise of Rs11.787 billion over preceding week’s figure of Rs2,153.913 billion. Advances by commercial banks rose to Rs2,072.432 billion against earlier week’s figure of Rs2,061.156 billion, larger by Rs11.276 billion, while of specialized banks it stood at Rs93.267 billion.

Investments of all scheduled banks declined in the week by Rs5.943 billion to Rs831.118 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs837.061 billion. Commercial banks investment level declined to Rs814.584 billion, from earlier week’s Rs820.843 billion, smaller by Rs6.259 billion, while of specialized banks it stood at Rs16.534 billion against previous week’s Rs16.218 billion, a rise of Rs0.316 billion.

Cash and balances with treasury banks of all scheduled banks declined by Rs23.722 billion during the week to stand at Rs245.675 billion against earlier week’s Rs269.397 billion. The figure for commercial banks fell to Rs243.828 billion against preceding week’s figure of Rs267.468 billion, a decrease of Rs23.64 billion. For specialized banks there was a fall of Rs0.083 billion to Rs1.846 billion, against earlier week’s figure of Rs1.929 billion.

Total assets of scheduled banks stood at Rs3,717.876 billion, a decline of Rs6.73 billion, over preceding week’s figure of Rs3,724.606 billion. Meanwhile, commercial banks assets stood at Rs3,605.886 billion, lower by Rs8.34 billion over previous week’s figure of Rs3,614.226 billion. Specialized banks assets rose by Rs1.609 billion to Rs111.989 billion against previous week’s Rs110.380 billion.
