SAHIWAL: Some unidentified armed men allegedly set ablaze an automated teller machine (ATM) of a private bank located opposite the district courts on Tuesday night.

The bank management and police suspect that the assailants attempted to break open the machine to steal cash but, after failing, set it on fire.

Reports said the ATM worth more than Rs2.14 million was completely destroyed. The fire also spread to a cash deposit machine, damaging it.

Rescue 1122 teams reached the spot and brought the fire under control. However, the ATM and cash boxes were badly damaged.

Civil Lines Police registered a case under Sections 427 and 435 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) on the complaint of Operations Manager Aqeel Irshad.

Police are attempting to trace the culprits with the help of CCTV footage.

SUICIDE: A young inter-divisional-level kabaddi player allegedly opted for suicide by consuming poisonous pills after his marriage proposal was rejected by the family of a girl at village 99/A-6R on Tuesday night.

Reports said Sheharyar (28) had fallen in love with a girl from the same village. He sent a marriage proposal to her family, but her parents rejected it.

Disheartened by the rejection, Sheharyar allegedly consumed poisonous pills. He writhed in pain before succumbing to death.

The family did not report the matter to police, and no case was registered under Section 174 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
