KARACHI: Major bodies representing workers and labourers have formally announced the formation of the country’s largest trade union alliance called the Trade Unions Confederation of Pakistan (TUCP).

Speaking at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, the workers’ representatives announced a 15-member federal coordination committee, naming National Trade Union Federation Secretary General Nasir Mansoor as its secretary.

The speakers pledged to launch a strong resistance against what they called continuing repression, exploitation and violation of workers’ fundamental rights and announced Oct 20 as a nationwide ‘Workers’ Action Day’ to mobilise workers across the country.

They said that the Pakistan Workers’ Federation, NTUF, Watan Dost Mazdoor Federation, Pakistan Textile Workers Federation, Pakistan Federation of Transport Workers, All Pakistan United Federation of Trade Unions, Home-Based Women Workers Federation Pakistan, All Pakistan Hotels Workers Federation, Muttahida Labour Federation, Ittehad Labour Union of Carpet Industries Pakistan, Sindh Agriculture General Workers Union and All Pakistan Newspaper Employees Confederation formally approved the formation of the alliance at a two-day joint meeting held in Karachi.

They warned the federal and provincial governments that no policy or legislation concerning workers would be accepted if it was imposed without consultation with the country’s largest workers’ alliance.

The representatives of the alliance also demanded an end to all forms of the contract labour system in the country, implementation of a living wage for all workers, concrete and effective measures to protect the lives and safety of workers in factories and workplaces and withdrawal of the Punjab Labour Code, immediate constitution of the Ninth Wage Board, immediate repeal of the Prevention of Electronic Crime Act and immediate release of all arrested political workers and leaders.
