LONDON: The fabulous historic Kohinoor diamond, part of Britain’s crown jewels, will not be handed over to Pakistan which had claimed it as a sign of good faith by Britain, Prime Minister James Callaghan told his Pakistani colleague Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, it was announced yesterday [Sept 24]. Mr Bhutto made the claim recently and said the giant diamond, kept in the Tower of London, was mined in Pakistan when it was still part of the British empire. India also put in a claim. The circumstances of how the diamond became part of the British crown jewels and set into the crown currently assigned to Queen Mother Elizabeth have been a subject of controversy. — News agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported from Teheran,] a Soviet airline pilot has defected to Iran seeking asylum in the US, [a news agency] reported here… . The pilot … landed [recently] in the Azerbaijan area of west Iran with his passenger plane… . The report did not say whether other people were aboard the aircraft. An Information Ministry spokesman could not clarify this point saying we also do not know but hope to learn soon.
