KARACHI: The Sindh Transport and Mass Transit Department has sent a summary to the provincial cabinet for the purchase of 500 electric buses.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, who also holds transport and information portfolios, said the Sindh government was further expanding the public transport system.

He said that, after approval by the cabinet, the new electric buses would be procured and operated in different cities of the province in phases.

According to an official statement, the minister said that it was the priority of the Sindh government to ensure that modern public transport facilities did not remain limited to Karachi alone.

“The scope of the Peoples Bus Service (PBS) is continuously being expanded, and the purpose of the new routes is to provide citizens with affordable and better travelling facilities”, he said.

The minister added that 50 double-decker buses would reach Sindh by Nov 30 and would be operated on different routes. The arrival of double-decker buses would provide passengers with additional travelling capacity.

He said the launch of the PBS in Qambar Shahdadkot was receiving an overwhelming appreciation from the public. Citizens of Larkana, Qambar, Shahdadkot and other areas were appreciating the modern bus service.

He added that the electric bus project would be an important addition to Sindh’s public transport system, while the new electric buses would also help address the growing transport problems in urban areas.
