ISLAMABAD, July 25: Pakistan Ambassador in Lebanon Asma Anisa said on Tuesday that the embassy was in close contact with Pakistanis in Beirut and they were safe and sound.

In a telephonic interview to the PTV, she said that so far around 100 Pakistanis had left Beirut while those employed on important positions were still there.

She said due to the presence of Condoleezza Rice in the city the situation in Beirut was calm but in the South the war was going on in full swing.

Israeli forces are carrying on air and ground attacks and most of the victims are civilians, she added.

The people who left their houses are facing difficulties because the relief agencies cannot operate openly in the war-stricken areas, she said.

However some NGOs, the United Nations and the International Committee of Red Crescent are busy in assisting the displaced people in their capacity, she added.

She said that most of the residents had left Beirut and the city was presenting a deserted look.

There is thin traffic on roads and few people are seen on roads and streets, she said.

She said the Pakistan Embassy is facilitating the travelling process of Pakistanis who want to leave the city.—APP
