16 die as van falls into gorge

GILGIT, July 19: Sixteen people were killed and 14 others injured when a passenger van fell into a gorge near Basham, 400km south of Gilgit, on Tuesday morning.

Reports reaching here quoted eyewitnesses as saying they had seen four bodies being fished out of the river.

They said the van was coming from Sakargah and met with the accident near Dirkand while taking a turn.

They said several people were searching for passengers who had been swept away by the current. They said volunteers had taken the inured to hospitals in Basham and Battagram.
