PESHAWAR: Awami National Party (ANP) central president Senator Aimal Wali Khan has warned that any attempt to alter the constitutional status, geographical boundaries or administrative identity of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will have “extremely serious consequences”, saying the party will oppose and resist any such move.

“The dreamers of dividing Pakhtunkhwa are living in a fool’s paradise. No one can separate even a tehsil, let alone a village council, from Pakhtunkhwa,” he said in a statement issued here on Monday.

Mr Khan said that ANP’s position regarding the identity, historical status and rights of Pakhtuns was clear. He maintained that the province was not the personal property of any individual, government or institution to be divided according to their wishes.

He said that any unconstitutional attempt to alter the province’s geographical or administrative identity would be considered an attack on the rights and national existence of Pakhtuns.

Party to hold four-day organisational meetings in Islamabad

The ANP leader said that Pakistan was a federation comprising different nationalities, federating units and identities. Weakening the historical existence and identity of any nationality or federating unit would ultimately weaken the federation itself, he added.

He warned that any such move would undermine national unity. He said that ANP had a longstanding position on boundaries and administrative units. He said that the party’s proposed approach would soon be formally discussed in meetings of its think-tank, central cabinet, central working committee and central council.

He said that after approval by the relevant party forums, the proposal would be transformed into an organised political movement.

The ANP said that his party would not compromise on the unity, identity and constitutional status of the province.

Meanwhile, ANP has announced that its major organisational and consultative meetings will be held in Islamabad from Aug 24 to 27.

According to a schedule issued by ANP secretary general Dr Mohammad Saleem Khan, the party’s think-tank will meet on Aug 24, central cabinet on Aug 25, central working committee on Aug 26 and central council on Aug 27. All meetings will be chaired by Senator Aimal Wali Khan.

The meetings would discuss the prevailing political situation and national affairs in detail and formulate a future course of action. Organisational matters, political issues and other important affairs would also be taken up.
