BAJAUR: Unidentified assailants shot dead a social worker in the Kohi area of Salarzai tehsil, police and residents said on Saturday.
They told Dawn that the incident occurred on Friday night when the attackers stormed the house of Zahoor Ahmad Jan, 27, and opened fire on him, killing him on the spot.
An official at the Salarzai police station said that policemen rushed to the scene after learning about the incident, adding that the attackers had fled the scene before the personnel arrived at the spot.
He said that an investigation had been launched to ascertain the motive behind the killing and to trace those responsible.
According to residents, Mr Jan was a social worker and cousin of slain social activist Malik Ziaur Rehman, who was killed by unidentified assailants on May 3.
No one claimed responsibility for the killing that drew public condemnation.
In a separate accident, two youths were killed after the motorcycle they were riding collided with a vehicle in the Qazafi area on Saturday.
According to Rescue 1122 Khar station, the accident occurred on the Bajaur-Munda Highway when a motorcycle and a vehicle collided head-on.
It said two people riding the motorcycle were wounded in the collision and were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
The deceased, identified as Mohammad Basit, 22, and Mohammad Aziz, belonged to Samarbagh in Lower Dir district.
The bodies were dispatched to their native areas after completing necessary formalities at the hospital.
