PESHAWAR: A woman was killed in a roof collapse incident in the Naguman area of the provincial capital, as heavy rain lashed several parts of the province on Sunday.
Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi told Dawn that the heirs of the deceased refused to shift the body to the hospital for postmortem. Besides, he said heavy rains in the Shilman area of Khyber district caused flash flooding; however, there were no casualties.
In Chitral district, flash floods caused by torrential rains washed away 28 homes, scores of shops, a mosque and inundated large tracts of fruit orchards and farmland in the high-altitude pasture of Jughur village on Sunday afternoon.
Lower Chitral Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Hashim Azim told Dawn that no casualty was reported as residents had shifted to safer places due to the community-based early warning system, which warned them through megaphones.
He said a jeepable suspension bridge connecting the two parts of the village and a water supply scheme have been washed away.
He said that teams from the district administration, relevant line departments, and rescue agencies are supervising relief operations and damage assessment for the immediate provision of relief to affected people.
Sajjad Ahmed Khan, a former chairman of Jughur village, said that floods damaged settlements on both sides of the local stream, also stopping the flow of Chitral River for an hour, and inundating a large area on both sides of the river.
He said cows, bulls, goats and chickens were washed away in floods. He said people were facing a shortage of drinking water.
In Mohmand district, monsoon showers accompanied by strong winds brought relief from sweltering heat on Sunday, but also triggered a landslide that blocked the main Peshawar-Bajaur Highway, disrupting traffic.
Light rain began in Ghalanai and adjoining areas during the day, bringing a sharp drop in temperature and ending several days of hot and humid weather. Residents welcomed the rainfall as cool winds swept across the district, providing much-needed relief from the prevailing heat.
The downpour, however, caused a landslide at the Karpa section of the Peshawar-Bajaur Highway, forcing the closure of the strategic route to all vehicular traffic.
The road blockade suspended movement between the two districts, leaving commuters stranded and causing significant inconvenience to travellers and residents.
Emergency personnel were deployed at Aqrab Dag in Lower Mohmand after a seasonal watercourse overflowed and submerged a public crossing.
Rescue teams remained stationed at the site, assisting pedestrians, motorcyclists and other commuters in crossing the flooded passage safely.
Rescue 1122 advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel through seasonal streams, flood-prone crossings and areas with fast-flowing water during the ongoing monsoon spell. According to the Met department, Dir received 61mm of rain over the past 24 hours, Malam Jabba 25, Cherat 22, Balakot 22, Kakul 18 and Parachinar 6mm.
