Khurram, Abbas sanctioned for code of conduct breach

TAROUBA: Pakistan pacers Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Abbas have been sanctioned for breaching Level 1 of the International Cricket Council Code of Conduct during the opening Test against the West Indies, the sport’s governing body said on Wednesday.

According to the ICC statement, Khurram was fined 15 per cent of his match fee, while Abbas received an official reprimand after both were found guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the code, which relates to using language, actions or gestures that disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter following dismissal.

Both players were also handed one demerit point each, their first disciplinary offence in the last 24 months.

Khurram was penalised for celebrating aggressively close to Shai Hope after dismissing him during the 17th over of the West Indies’ second innings, while Abbas was reprimanded for an animated celebration near Jomel Warrican after claiming the final wicket of the innings.

Both players admitted the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by match referee Jeff Crowe, eliminating the need for formal hearings.

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Richard Kettleborough along with third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal.

Level 1 breaches carry penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
