KARACHI, July 14: Dr Kashif Mateen, who was booked and arrested for stealing a kidney from a patient during surgery at a hospital, was further remanded on Friday to police custody for another day for interrogation and investigation.

The judicial magistrate, Central, Amir Awan, gave the suspected doctor to the police custody till Saturday. He will be produced before the magistrate on Monday when a doctor and a paramedic would record their statements in the court under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Dr Mateen has been accused of stealing a healthy kidney from a patient, Mohammad Kashif, during a surgical operation on May 7.

The complainant, who lodged an FIR against the doctor with the Taimuria police, alleged that instead of removing gall bladder, the doctor removed his healthy kidney. The doctor, who was arrested on Saturday, was remanded to police initially for two days.

The police beefed up the security of the doctor when he was produced before the court. He was reported to have been manhandled by some under trial prisoners, when he was first produced before the court. The police, however, denied the incident and said some UTPs had hurled expletives on the doctor after learning the allegation against him.

BAIL DENIED: The additional district and sessions judge, Sher Bano Karim, rejected the pre-arrest bail of a man, who was booked for kidnapping a 13-year-old girl.
