KARACHI, July 14: A new mafia is fast emerging in the city and now it can be witnessed in most parts of the city even on the main roads of Clifton and Defence areas.

In the backdrop of water crisis being faced by the citizens a number of such elements have emerged to exploit the water-starved Karachiites. Besides water tankers, nowadays donkey carts fitted with storage tank, generator and suction pump can be seen supplying water at exorbitant rates.

The storage tank also mentions the cellphone number of the cart driver and capacity of the tank, reveals The Help Line Trust in its letter to the city nazim, naib city nazim, DHA administrator, KWSB MD, town nazims and the Cantonment Boards.

The letter mentions that these people make either a proper hole in water supply lines or use manholes for valves for sucking water with the help of portable sucking machines and generators.

This started a few months back with a few carts, but now their number has increased to hundreds not only destroying the water supply lines but also disturbing flow of traffic even on main roads.—PPI
