KHARTOUM: The Sudanese Government tonight [July 2] announced that troops loyal to President Numeiry have crushed the attempted coup. An official communique said that security forces regained control of the capital after several hours of street fighting. It was however silent on the fate of Gen. Numeiry, earlier reported captured by rebels when he landed at Khartoum airport. The … statement said “some wayward armed elements tried to stage a coup d’etat at dawn today … After a battle in the streets … the armed forces of the people succeeded in destroying the criminal attempt.” — News agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies from Abidjan, Ivory Coast,] Mr Shahid Hussein, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Economic Affairs has appealed to the international community to consider [the] possibility of holding a summit meeting of Third World leaders, as suggested by Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto … to overcome the present grave economic situation. He made this suggestion in his address to the [UN] Economic and Social Council here… . [He] said: “The developing countries cannot resign themselves to this situation. They must … break the impasse in international development.”
