LAHORE: At least two persons died and nine others injured in rain-related incidents in Punjab during the past 24 hours.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Punjab Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmad said the casualties resulted from the collapse of walls, roofs and a billboard, triggered by strong winds and heavy rain.

Mr Ahmad says that in Attock, two persons died and three others injured when a wall collapsed on them near Naya Pump.

In a separate incident in Para Shaheen Bagh, three persons sustained injuries as the roof of a house caved in, the spokesperson says.

In Khushab’s Qaidabad area, one person was injured after being struck by lightning, while in Sargodha, a man suffered injuries when a signboard collapsed on him due to strong winds, he added.

In Sheikhupura, one person was injured after a wooden roof collapsed at Chak Risala Road. Rescue 1122 said emergency teams responded to all incidents and shifted the injured to nearby hospitals.

According to the PMD, Mandi Bahauddin recorded the highest rainfall of 23mm between 8pm and 11pm on Wednesday. Murree received 17mm, while Hafizabad and Sheikhupura recorded 14mm each.

Other areas received comparatively lighter rainfall, including Gujranwala (11mm), Lahore Airport (10mm), Gujrat (10mm), Garhi Dupatta (10mm), Lahore (6mm), Jhelum (6mm), Mangla (5mm), Balakot (4mm), Barkhan (4mm), Islamabad Zero Point (4mm), Chaklala (4mm), Kotli (3mm), Pattan (1mm), Chakwal (1mm) and Dera Ghazi Khan (1mm).

Meanwhile, provincial minister and chairman of the Cabinet Committee for Disaster Management Khawaja Salman Rafique visited the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) control room and reviewed the weather situation.

On this occasion, PDMA Director General Umar Javed gave a detailed briefing on the latest situation of rains and dams.

Mr Rafique also reviewed the water ratio in Indian dams and was informed in the briefing that pre-monsoon rains are predicted in various districts of Punjab, including Lahore until July 6. He also reviewed the water flow situation in the rivers.

Mr Rafique said that the monsoon preparations of all the relevant institutions are complete and relevant departments are on alert to deal with any emergency situation.

The district emergency operation centers of all districts, and the provincial control room are also on alert, he added.

The minister said the Rescue 1122 and other agencies, including Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) should keep their machinery and personnel on alert.

He directed that water drainage from residential areas should be especially ensured as soon as possible. He warned citizens against touching electric poles and hanging wires.

PDMA DG Mr Javed said that the situation is being monitored around the clock. He advisedpeople to stay away from dilapidated mud houses and other buildings and take special care of children, never letting them go near accumulated water in low-lying areas.
