KARACHI: A worker of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was shot dead and two others were wounded in Orangi Town, police said on Wednesday.
They said that the victims were sitting at a local PPP office near Ghousia Chowk late on Tuesday night when several armed assailants emerged there on motorcycles and opened indiscriminate fire.
As a result, Faisal Abbasi, 45, was killed, while Fahad Abbasi, 30, and Fahad Jamal, 42, sustained bullet wounds.
West SSP Tariq Illahi Mastoi said that Faisal was the union committee (UC) president of the local PPP chapter.
Following the incident, enraged people took to the streets and blocked roads in the area in protest over the killing. However, police managed to bring the situation under control.
Mominabad SHO Shahbaz Yusuf said the killers had been identified and they were residents of the same locality. He added that a dispute had arisen between the two parties over an issue in the area about a month ago, which escalated and ultimately led to the attack.
PPP MPA Ali Ahmed Jan told the media that the killers were drug peddlers, who had targeted the party’s local leader because he had opposed their activities.
Meanwhile, Zulfiqar Abbasi, president of Jamaat-i-Islami’s legal and medical aid committee, told the media that the wounded Fahad was his son and the deceased Faisal was his nephew.
The deceased, who had two wives, was the father of eight children.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari strongly condemned the murder and asked the authorities to bring the killers to justice forthwith.
