KARACHI: Five seminary students from Punjab were shot at and wounded in Clifton late on Monday night while they were on their way to visit the mausoleum of Abdullah Shah Ghazi, police said.

A police officer said the students had come from Wazirabad to attend a religious gathering organised by Dawat-i-Islami at Old Subzi Mandi. Later, around eight students were travelling to visit the shrine in Clifton when unidentified persons signalled them to stop. When they did not stop, the armed men opened fire.

As a result, five students sustained bullet wounds. They were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where their condition was stated to be out of danger. They were identified as Hafiz Ali, 21; Samama Owais, 20; Mubashir, 19; Hafiz Mohammad Talha, 24; and Mohsin Raza, 32.

South SSP Mahzoor Ali told the media that the incident did not appear to be a robbery attempt.
