SARGODHA, July 12: Three accused, who are facing trial under the Hudood ordinance, suffered injuries when their rivals shot at them while they were being escorted to a court by the police on Wednesday.

As a police guard opened retaliatory fire, one of the assailants, Muhammad Asif of Ahmadpur Sharqya died on the spot while his accomplices, Muhammad Pervez and Javed, were injured. Yet another assailant was overpowered by the people while another aide and the driver they had hired sped away.

Reports said accused Shahid Iqbal, Yousaf and Illyas were escorted by the Sargodha police to the court of Shahpur Judicial Magistrate Zafar Mehdi. They were entering court premises when some of their rivals — Asif, Pervez, Yousaf and Umer Farooq — opened fire on them. All the three accused suffered injuries.

In retaliation, a police guard shot at the assailants as a result of which Asif died on the spot. Pervez and Javed suffered injuries and were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in critical condition.

Meanwhile, many litigants present there chased the assailants and overpowered Yousaf and handed him over to the police. Umar Farooq and the car driver made good their escape.

It is learnt that accused Shahid Iqbal was involved in the murder of the father of Javed, one of the assailants.

Sargodha Range DIG Pervez Lodhi and DPO Ahmad Mubarik reached the spot and appreciated the guard and the people who gave a befitting response to the assault.

KILLS WIFE: A woman was beheaded by his husband at a village in Shahpur, some 25 kilometres from here, on Wednesday.

Reports said the suspect had developed illicit relations with another woman of his area and asked his wife to allow him to contract the second marriage but she refused. He beheaded his wife to clear his path to the second marriage.

The Shapur police have registered a case.
