GUJRAT: The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) has issued notices to at least 890 commercial defaulters with a warning of police cases against them.
Official sources said the agency had accelerated its recovery drive in an effort to improve revenue collection and ensure the continuity of water and sanitation services in the city.
As per these notices, the commercial consumers have been warned to pay their bills otherwise Wasa may lodge police cases against them besides other legal actions.
A senior official told Dawn that during May, Wasa delivered bills to a total of 4,998 commercial consumers. He said around 1,181 consumers regularly pay their bills, while a considerable number had failed to clear their dues.
He said Wasa issued notices to around 890 commercial defaulters, out of whom around 361 cleared their dues.He said as per the official data, at least 60,000 consumers had been identified in the city and some 18,000 had so far been paying their bills regularly since Wasa launched the billing system around six months ago.
Wasa services were launched in Gujrat city back in September last year. However, the agency has been facing a challenging situation in terms of collecting bills as citizens and businessmen are reluctant to deposit their dues due to poor performance of the civic agency.
Wasa officials have appealed to consumers to pay their bills timely and cooperate with the agency to ensure uninterrupted water and sanitation services.
