BAJAUR: A suspected quadcopter, reportedly operated from an unknown location, struck a house, leaving a child killed and a woman injured in War Mamund tehsil here on Sunday afternoon, the police said.

Police sources and residents said the incident occurred in the Inam Khoro China Gai area when a drone fired a shell at the house of Hayatullah.

They added that Mehran, 9, son of Hayatullah, died on the spot, and a 35-year-old woman, Tahira Bibi, was injured. They said the deceased and injured were later shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, Khar.

A police official confirmed the incident and told Dawn that a team from the War Mamund police station immediately rushed to the scene and collected the evidence.

The official said that an investigation was underway to determine the circumstances of the incident. It remains unconfirmed where the quadcopter was operated from and who was behind the incident.

The tragic incident has caused panic among residents and drawn condemnation from various segments of society. Elders, political and social leaders and lawmakers expressed serious concern over the incident and called for a thorough investigation.

Bajaur Aman Jirga chief Sahibzada Haroon Rashid, PTI MPA Dr Hamidur Rehman and ANP spokesperson Obaid ullah Khan Salarzai condemned the incident in social media posts.

Terming the incident “unacceptable and intolerable”, they also demanded justice and compensation for the bereaved family.

This incident has shocked people across the district, and such incidents would not be tolerated further, they said.

It merits a mention here that several areas of Bajaur, particularly War and Lowi Mamund tehsils, have witnessed similar incidents over the past few months, leaving some people dead and injured, most of them women and children.
