LAHORE: A drone carrying illegal drugs allegedly crashed into a residential area of Narang Mandi, creating panic among the residents.

The police dispatched multiple teams to the area following a 15 call.

Sources claimed that the drugs were being smuggled to a neighbouring country, a notorious business flourishing in Lahore, Sialkot and Kasur for the last few decades as a way of cross-border drug trafficking.

Payments against these smuggled drugs were being settled in Dubai, as per the previous reports prepared by law enforcement agencies.

Sheikhupura DPO Bilal Zafar Sheikh told Dawn the police have taken the drone into custody, isolated the crime scene and launched investigations. He said that the police were alerted that a drone fell on a house’s roof in the Narang Police jurisdiction.

According to the initial inquiry, he said, a black drone, approximately 3ft long, was found on the roof of a house in Mohallah Rafiqabad, Gali Plaza Wali. A packet wrapped in yellow tape with reflective lights was found inside the drone, he added.

The DPO said the packet contained approximately 5kg of heroin. He said the police immediately intensified patrolling in the area.

He said it was yet to be confirmed whether the drone was sent to smuggle the drugs across the border or somewhere in the city.

“We are trying to gather information to track down the suspects who operated the drone,” the DPO said.

So far it was reported that the drone was operated from a distance, minimising the chances of capture.
