TOBA TEK SINGH: Two young brothers died and as many were critically injured after their motorcycle crashed into a police picket near Samanabad Canal bridge on the Sargodha Road in Faisalabad late on Monday night.
The Millat Town Police said that the barrier had been temporarily erected due to security reasons near an imambargah.
All four youths, belonging to Okara, were riding the same motorcycle. Two of them, identified as brothers Muhammad Zain (18) Asad Sarfraz (20), died instantly while their third brother Husnain Sarfraz (17) and their cousin Salman Iftikhar (21) were shifted to the Allied Hospital.
Their condition was said to be serious.
FOOD SAFETY DAY: Experts at a seminar on the World Food Safety Day called for ensuring safe food to protect public health as an estimated 866 million – almost 1 in 9 people in the world – fall ill after eating contaminated food and 1.52 million die every year.
The seminar held at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) on Tuesday under the theme “From Burden to Solutions – Safe Food Everywhere,” was jointly organised by the Pak-Korea Nutrition Center (PKNC), Nutrition International (NI), and the Punjab Food Authority (PFA).
Dr Imran Pasha said that contaminated food causes a wide range of illnesses, from acute gastrointestinal infections to long-term health complications. Dr Atif Randhawa said that developing countries, including Pakistan, bear a disproportionate share of food borne diseases burden due to food handling practices, poor sanitation, and limited awareness.
Dr Asif Kamran emphasised that strengthening regulatory frameworks and investing in food safety education were critical for reducing food-borne disease prevalence in the country. Dr Allah Rakha underscored the importance of scientific research and innovation in identifying food contamination risks and developing effective preventive strategies.
PFA Master Trainer Dr Ayesha Batool informed participants about the initiatives undertaken by the PFA to improve food quality and consumer protection. Nutrition International zonal managers Muhammad Irfan and Muzaffar Ali also spoke.
ANTI-ENCROACHMENT DRIVE: A railway anti-encroachment operation was carried out on Tuesday at the Nishatabad railway yard in Faisalabad.
Fruit carts, breakfast stalls, and other handcarts installed within railway limits were removed and one kanal of Railways land, worth Rs16 million was retrieved from illegal occupants.
The operation was led by Railway Police SHO Rao Umair.
COMPLAINT: Commissioner Musarrat Jabeen has directed the Toba DC to furnish a report regarding a complaint of a senior lawyer who claimed that qanoongo Ghulam Murtaza who had failed the promotion examination in 2025, has been given the additional charge of naib tehsildar and revenue sub-registrar.
The complainant, Advocate Sanaullah Devel, had further claimed that all 20 qanoongos who passed the same examination had been ignored for this post.
Furthermore, he claimed that the said qanoongo had a number of corruption cases registered by the anti-corruption establishment against him. He claimed that in 2024, the Toba AC had recommended action against the qanoongo under the Peeda Act but he was still ‘enjoying a money making” post.
