RAWALPINDI, July 11: Eight persons were arrested on charges of clashes, while several others booked by the Pindi police on Tuesday on the eve of voting for Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly, police said.

As many as 1112 polling stations had been set up in Pakistan to facilitate refugees to elect 12 members of the legislative assembly.

In Rawalpindi, some political activists stormed a polling station set up at Gorden college, clashed with their rivals and damaged furniture and window pans. Nearly five persons were reported injured during the clash between the two political rival groups. However, the police have arrested eight political activists and registered cases against them.

When the DPO Rawalpindi Saud Aziz was contacted, he confirmed the arrests and said that police had taken all possible security measures to avert any violence during the polling.

Similarly, a case has been registered against some unidentified persons who allegedly tried to disrupt the polling in the Banni police area.

Muhammad Taj Abbasi, one of the candidates lodged a complaint with the Airport police saying that he was present at the polling station when a group of political activists led by Raja Mujahid, Raja Imtiaz along with eight armed men arrived there in a van and damaged chairs and tables. He also alleged that the attackers hurled threats of dire consequences to him and later escaped.
