LAHORE, July 11: The city district government Lahore is planning to establish community stores for the provision of essential items at cheaper rates. A committee has been formed to work out feasibility of the plan, reveal minutes of a CDGL meeting held here on Monday.
The feasibility report will be finalised within two weeks.
According to the plan, there will be two types of stores—one for government officials and the other for public, sources say.
The officials will have membership of the community store likely to be established at the Town Hall. They will either pay through credit cards or get the store bills deducted from their salaries each month.
The sources say that District Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood wanted home delivery service, but higher overhead costs prevented him from pursuing the idea.
Products for the proposed stores will be obtained directly from mills and the market, eliminating the role of middlemen mostly responsible for inflated costs of merchandise, they say.
For the public, four or five outlets are being planned where customers will get supplies on cash payment.
However, terms of reference for both types of stores are yet to be finalised.
ILLEGAL PLAZAS: During the meeting the CDGL also decided to conduct a detailed survey of 118 roads in the city to figure out illegally constructed commercial buildings.
However, the areas falling under the Lahore Development Authority’s control will be excluded from this exercise being undertaken “to calculate commercialisation fee on rational basis”.
The Solid Waste Management wing will provide its manpower for the survey, which will be completed within 15 days.
It was also decided that immediate steps would be taken to retrieve CDGL land from encroachers for establishing new petrol pumps. Cooperation would be sought from the town administration concerned for the purpose.
To expedite the process, the DCO on Tuesday held a meeting with the EDOs of works and services, municipal service and SWM district officer.
CDGL COMPLEX: EDO (works and services) has been directed to make a presentation to the district nazim on Saturday about the progress made on the construction of CDGL Complex at the Town Hall.
