WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain from June 23 to 25 to discuss regional security priorities, including the implementation of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding and maritime stability in the Strait of Hormuz, the State Department said on Monday.
According to an official statement, Rubio will engage with senior officials in the three Gulf countries on a range of issues tied to recent diplomatic developments with Iran, including efforts to ensure “full and free safe transit” through the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional stability following the recent surge in diplomatic activity between Washington and Tehran.
The visit comes in the immediate aftermath of US-Iran negotiations held in Switzerland, where mediators Pakistan and Qatar announced a 60-day roadmap under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
The agreement included the establishment of a High Level Committee, technical working groups on nuclear and sanctions issues, and new mechanisms aimed at preventing escalation in sensitive regional flashpoints, including maritime routes.
In Bahrain, Rubio is scheduled to meet with representatives of the GCC to discuss shared regional priorities, reflecting Washington’s effort to coordinate closely with its Gulf partners as the diplomatic process with Iran moves into an implementation phase.
The State Department said the discussions will cover “a range of regional priorities including the memorandum of understanding with Iran, efforts to secure full and free safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz, and the importance of peace and stability in the region.”
Analysts view the trip as part of a broader US diplomatic push to consolidate regional support for the evolving framework with Iran, particularly as Washington begins to operationalize elements of the Switzerland agreement, including maritime security arrangements and de-escalation mechanisms linked to ongoing regional tensions.
The Gulf visit also underscores the continued centrality of the Strait of Hormuz in US regional strategy, even as Washington simultaneously engages Iran in structured negotiations aimed at reducing tensions and establishing a longer-term diplomatic framework.
Rubio’s meetings are expected to focus on aligning Gulf partners with the emerging US approach to Iran, ensuring coordination on maritime security, and reinforcing commitments to regional stability at a time of rapid diplomatic movement in the Middle East.
