SAHIWAL: A sanitary worker of the staff colony of the High Security Prison (HSP), Sahiwal, was arrested on charges of attempting to rape a prison warder’s wife and critically injuring her as well as minor daughter who intervened to protect her mother.
The incident allegedly occurred in the morning of June 18 in the colony located on the premises of the prison.
According to the first information report (FIR), registered with Civil Lines police, the prison warder lived with his wife and minor daughter on the third-floor the apartment building of the staff colony.
He left for his morning duty shift on June 18 when the suspect, a sanitary worker, allegedly knocked on his house door.
When his wife opened it, the suspect forced his entry, threatened her with a knife and attempted to rape her. He tore her clothes.
The FIR states that the woman resisted. During the struggle, she allegedly bit the suspect’s hand in an attempt to free herself.
Her minor daughter who witnessed the incident rushed to her mother’s rescue.
According to police, the suspect grabbed the girl, tried to strangle her and injured her hand and fingers with the knife. Police said the girl managed to escape and ran outside while shouting for help.
The suspect allegedly attempted to stop her from alerting neighbours but failed.
The girl jumped from a window and continued raising the alarm. Her leg and feet got critically injured after the jump. Meanwhile, her mother hid under a bed during the chaos.
The suspect tried to drag her out and injured her with the knife. During the scuffle, he also snatched a gold earring.
Hearing the cries for help, the neighbours rushed to the apartment and overpowered the suspect before informing the police.
Civil Lines police arrested the suspect and registered a rape case on the complaint of the woman’s husband.
Investigating Officer Tahir confirmed to Dawn that the suspect had been arrested and an investigation was underway. He said some residents of the colony had previously complained about the suspect’s behaviour.
