25 BHUs without doctors

GUJRANWALA, July 10: Over 25 basic health units, mostly in Naushera Virkan tehsil, are running without in charge doctors. A source said the government had established these units in each union council in remote areas where in charge doctors had been provided a better salary package by the chief minister. But the doctors were not willing to work in the far-flung areas owing to a sense of insecurity and many other reasons. They preferred to work in the union councils near to cities and towns.

These health units were being run by the dispensers and other staff in the absence of doctors. And the patients preferred to go to private hospitals or state-run hospitals in Kamoki or Gujranwala.

District health officer Dr Hamid Ali said BHUs would be provided doctors soon. He said union council nazims and councillor had been authorised to check the attendance of doctors and submit their report in case of their absence.

He said the department would take stern action against those doctors who were not performing their duties honestly.

POLICE WARNED: Newly-appointed DIG Malik Muhammad Iqbal on Monday warned that illegal confinement and torture in police stations would not be tolerated and officials involved in it would be taken to task.

Speaking at a police officers’ meeting at his office, he directed all DPOs of the region to organise Rescue-15 and monitor the general hold-up and mobile patrolling.

He said action against landgrabbers and criminals would be taken.

Headquarters SP Abdul Qadir Qayyum and other police officers were also present on the occasion.

EMERGENCY STAFF: The Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) division No 1 on Monday deputed emergency staff to remove defects in smooth power supply and directed all line superintendents to be present along with their staff at respective complaint offices.

The XEN asked all SDOs to get their mobile phones switched on for consumers’ facility. He warned that those who failed to attend consumers’ calls would be taken to task.

TEACHERS: Various teachers’ bodies have criticised the ruling party MPA and his men for allegedly manhandling SES teachers association vice-president Rana Muhammad Anwer at the office of EDO (education) and demanded their immediate arrest.

At a meeting held here on Monday at Model Town Jamia High School, the participants said all teachers would resort to protest if the accused were not arrested shortly.
