SUKKUR: A local Pakistan Peoples Party leader and his driver were shot dead in what appeared to be a targeted attack in Pannu Aqil on Saturday, police said.

They said that unidentified assailants fired a volley of bullets on a car near Baiji Chowk and fled. As a result of the attack, PPP leader Ghulam Hussain Kalhoro and his driver, Abdullah Maitlo, suffered critical bullet wounds and they were rushed to Taluka Hospital Panno Aqil for treatment.

Due to their precarious conditions, they were referred to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), where they died during treatment.

Sources said that there was an ongoing dispute between two rival groups of Kalhoro and Mahar community and the targeted attack might be linked to that.

However, police have launched an investigation and started collecting evidence. A search operation to trace and arrest the fleeing assailants was also launched in the area.

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed grief over the killings and extended condolences to the bereaved families. He sought a detailed report from the inspector general of police regarding the incident and ordered him to ensure arrest of those responsible.

“No compromise will be made on the law and order situation,” the chief minister said, adding that his government stand with the families of the victims in this difficult time.
