KARACHI: [The city] sweltered in the grip of a heat wave for the second day yesterday ... [June 12]. The maximum temperatures shot up to 106 degrees F. The minimum recorded early ... was 85 degrees — two degrees above normal. “Cool day and cloudy weather” was the welcome forecast for today by the meteorologists. The change set in yesterday evening which was slightly cooler than the hot and sultry evening of the previous day. Several mild cases of heat stroke were reported in the city.

By the evening the price of ice had shot up to a rupee per seer — eight times the normal rate. Ice vendors were virtually mobbed and they earned a fortune.

[Meanwhile, our staff correspondent also reports that] A water riot was averted in the Jacob Lines ... by the timely intervention of the Cantonment Police. The scene was a community tap behind the Jacob Lines where about 200 persons had gathered with their jars. The water came in a trickle and the heat led to frayed tempers. There were several scuffles but before matters could deteriorate police help arrived. The area has been a trouble spot for [the] last several days.
