KARACHI: Armed robbers looted Rs300 million from the cash van of a private security company in Federal B Area on Friday.
Investigators believe the heist was carried out with the assistance of an insider, identified as a senior member of the security company’s crew.
Central SSP Dr Mohammed Imran Khan said the van belonging to SOS Security Company was transporting a large amount of cash from Tariq Road to a private bank branch located in Block-14 of F.B. Area, within the jurisdiction of the Jauharabad police station.
During the journey, the van’s crew made an unscheduled stop near Rizwan Park, where they went to a roadside restaurant for tea. In the meantime, four robbers arrived at the location on foot and took control of the cash van.
Police say private security firm’s van was transporting cash in F.B. Area when guards abandoned it to have tea
The robbers had already parked a double-cabin vehicle in a nearby street before approaching the van. After taking possession of the cash van, they drove it to a street near Altaf Pakwan, where they removed bags containing Rs300m cash. The suspects then loaded the cash onto the waiting vehicle and fled the scene.
Police teams were subsequently sent to the area and a search operation was launched to trace the robbers and recover the stolen money.
SSP Khan, who visited the crime scene and reviewed the initial findings, stated that available evidence strongly suggested the involvement of the company’s chief crew member, identified as Wajid. According to the investigators, Wajid was responsible for safeguarding the keys to the van’s cash compartment and had exclusive control over access to the cash storage area.
They say that Wajid facilitated the robbery by providing the suspects with access to the cash compartment. Thereafter, he escaped along with the robbers.
“All available evidence clearly indicates the involvement of Wajid in the robbery,” SSP Khan told reporters.
According to SSP Khan, surveillance footage and other evidence were being obtained from the spot and the case was being investigated from multiple angles.
He added that investigators were examining multiple aspects of the case, including possible assistance from other individuals and whether the robbery was planned over a longer period.
Teams have also been formed to identify and arrest the other suspects.
