Eight-year-old girl among two killed in Lakki suicide blast

LAKKI MARWAT: Two people, including an eight-year-old girl, were killed and several others were injured in a suicide blast in the Kherukhel Pacca area of Lakki Marwat district on Friday.

Police and Rescue 1112 officials said that the blast occurred near a mosque in the remote rural area.

“The emergency rescue service dispatched medical teams along with ambulances to the blast site soon after learning about the incident,” a rescue official told Dawn.

He identified the deceased as Asma Bibi, 8, and Asad Ali, 25, and said that the bodies and the injured were shifted to the district headquarters hospital.

A police official said armed villagers killed the suicide bomber before he could reach the mosque to target worshippers with his explosive-laden motorcycle.

He added that the device exploded, injuring at least five people, including minors.

The official also confirmed the death of two people, including a minor girl, in the incident. A large number of villagers were present in the mosque to offer Jumma prayers at the time of explosion. A large contingent of law-enforcement personnel later reached the area and launched a search for terrorists.

Meanwhile, three police personnel among four people were martyred and one other got injuries in targeted killings and IED blasts in different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday.

In Bannu district, two police constables were martyred in separate incidents of targeted killings on Friday.

In the morning, constable Mishkat Amir was returning home after attending a gathering at Hamza Tablighi mosque when gunmen attacked him near Azad Mandi. He died from critical injuries on the spot.

On Thursday night, constable Mohammad Roshan, who belonged to Wazir sub-division police, was targeted by armed men outside his residence in Saidgi Bakakhel area.

According to police, Roshan was performing duties at North Waziristan IDP Camp in Bakakhel and had returned home after completing his duties. The attackers opened fire on him while he was outside his house, leaving him critically injured. He later succumbed to the injuries in the hospital.

Police officials said both incidents were acts of targeted killing and terrorism. Separate funeral prayers for the two martyred constables were offered at the police lines, Bannu.

Police personnel, local elders and residents condemned the attacks and demanded immediate arrest of perpetrators and strict punishment for those involved.

In Bajaur tribal district, a man was killed in an improvised explosive device blast in remote Barang tehsil on Friday.

According to police and residents, the explosion occurred near a seminary run by cleric Maulana Ibrahim in the Asil Targaoo area shortly after Friday prayers.

The IED, planted on a pathway near the seminary, went off when a man, Shazada Mian, was passing through the area, leaving him critically injured, said Mansoor Khan, spokesperson for district police.

He said that the residents shifted 56-year-old injured Shahzada Mian, a resident of Asil Targaoo village, to a nearby hospital but he died.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast.

In Lakki Marwat, policeman was injured when an armoured personnel carrier (APC) vehicle was targeted with a motorcycle-borne IED in Ghaznikhel area on Friday.

A police official said that terrorists had parked the motorcycle with an IED fitted to it to target a police patrol team.

He said that a police official received minor injuries in the attack, while other members of the team remained unhurt.

A large police contingent later reached the venue on the special instructions of DPO Nazir Khan and launched a search for terrorists in the area.

He said that police experts also collected evidence from the attack and initiated an investigation.

The DPO said that terrorists wanted to spread panic and fear in the area by targeting public places and law-enforcement personnel.

He said the police would continue operations until the last terrorist was eliminated.

In Karak district, a police official embraced martyrdom in a targeted attack by terrorists on Thursday night, police said on Friday.

A police official said that constable Naseerullah lost his life when armed motorcyclists attacked him near Muhabatkhel Algada area. He said that the deceased was posted to the District Special Branch of the police department.

The official said that body of the martyred policeman was taken to police lines after completing medico-legal formalities where DPO Imran Khan, Assistant Commissioner Shamim Khan, other police and district administration officers, area elders, relatives and people from different walks of life attended his funeral prayers.

A well-dressed and smart police contingent presented a final salute to their fallen colleague while police and administration officers placed floral wreaths on his coffin.
