HYDERABAD, July 8: Despite the Sindh High Court ban, about 53 jirgas were organised in Sindh from January to June 2006.
The jirgas decided disputes related to karo-kari, kidnapping, rape, murder and land.
This was stated in a report prepared by the Rights Watch of Indus Development Organisation.
The report was released here on Saturday.
Giving the break-up, the report said that 17 jirgas were held in Jacobabad, 10 in Larkana, eight in Shikarpur, three each in Nawabshah and Sukkur, two each in Sanghar, Khairpur and Dadu and one each in Kashmore, Matiari, Mirpurkhas, Naushero Feroze, Badin and Ghotki district.
The report said that jirgas imposed a fine of Rs37,143,000 on rival parties.
PRESS CONFERENCE: Relatives of the kidnapped journalist from Golarchi, Mr Meharuddin Mari, and journalists have accused police of arresting him without any case.
They said that the journalist was being held incommunicado since July 2.
Speaking at a press conference at the press club here on Saturday, Dildar Mari, Balach Khan Mari, Mohammad Irfan, and Mohammad Saleh Nohani said that they had gone to the residence of Federal State Minister Mohammad Ali Malkani in Chhachh Jehan Khan village near Chohar Jamali on July 2 for the settlement of a land dispute.
They said that when they came out of the bungalow of the state minister, Chohar Jamali SHO Nazeer Magsi, ASI Ibrahim and Sujawal SHO Nooruddin Brohi along with a contingent of police with mobiles blocked the road and arrested Meharuddin Mari.
They said that police refused to give any details about the arrest.
They said that till date, Meharuddin has not been produced in any court and he was being held incommunicado.
They said that journalists had held protest demonstrations in different towns but whereabouts of Meharuddin were not being disclosed.
They said that they apprehended danger to the life of Meharuddin Mari
They demanded that Meharuddin should be produced in the relevant court failing which they would file a writ in the high court against police officers who had allegedly kidnapped the journalist.
They said that they would also stage protest demonstration and observe huger strike outside the Hyderabad press club.
