RAWALPINDI: Punjab government had allocated Rs938.9 million for provision of missing facilities in public schools in Rawalpindi district 2025-26, but released Rs424.8 million and no funds were released for the provision of drinking water and furniture.

A senior official of the district administration told Dawn that the provincial had released 50 percent of the amount which was utilised by the District Education Authority and the remaining 50pc funds will be released in next fiscal year 2026-27.

According to official data, Rs76.7 million had been allocated for construction of 89 dangerous classrooms in 54 schools in the district, Rs437.4 million for the construction additional classrooms in 201 schools, Rs39.950 million for provision of drinking water in 47 schools, Rs116.2 million for solarisation in 126 schools, Rs78.11 million for provision of furniture in 242 schools, Rs142.742 million for construction of boundary walls in 164 schools and Rs47.750 million for construction of toilets in 99 schools.

“No funds released for the provision of drinking water in 47 schools and furniture in 242 schools in the district,” he said.

However, he said that from the released funds, 98 percent boundary walls work in 151 schools has been completed and 96 percentconstruction work on 155 toilets in 87 schools has been completed and 82 percentconstruction work of additional 197 classrooms in 111 schools has been completed so far.

He said that there were more than 1,178 public schools in the district while 17 special education centres and 4,733 private schools in the five tehsils of Rawalpindi district.

He said the development work would be completed by end of this year as the provincial government will release more funds in this regard in coming days.

A senior official of District Education Authority said that the provincial government had formed Strategic Management Unit at the School Education Department, which would monitor the development work across the province.

He said that the remaining 50 percent funds would be utilised through SMU in the coming days and all the development work would be done on same pattern. He said the building department delay the construction work and the SMU would speed up the work.
