KARACHI, July 7: Police are looking for the doctor who has been accused of stealing a kidney of a patient during surgery at a private hospital in North Nazimabad.

The patient, Mohammad Kashif, had complained that he had undergone a surgery at the Medi Complex Hospital in Block-L, North Nazimabad, for removal of his gall bladder on May 7, but the consultant doctor, Dr Syed Kashif Mateen, removed his kidney instead of the gal bladder.

The patient lodged an FIR against the doctor at Taimuria police station on Thursday night.

Sources at the hospital stated that Dr Mateen had joined the MCH about a year back and had eight patients of gall bladder and urinary bladder disorder under his treatment at the hospital.

His letterhead shows that he did his MBBS from Dow Medical College, FRCS from England and Ireland, FICS from the USA, and MRSH from England. He is associated with the MCH as general consultant, heapatobiliary surgeon and urologist.

The police have transferred the case to the investigation wing. They also conducted a raid on his house in the Brigade police limits but he was not present there. He did not also turn up at the hospital for duty on Friday, the police said.

SSP Mir Zubair Mehmood, who holds the charge of DIG Investigation Zone-II, said that police had found some clues to the whereabouts of the doctor and would conduct another raid to pick him up.

Meanwhile, Sindh Health Minister Shabbir Ahmed Qaimkhani has constituted a medical committee to probe into the matter, adds APP.

The committee comprises Surgeon Humayoun Zafar, Urologist Ayesha Tahir and Acting-Additional Secretary (Technical) of the Sindh Health Department. It has been advised to submit its report within the next five days.

Mr Qaimkhani has constituted another four-member committee to ascertain facts about the death of a patient, Lala Sultan, at the Civil Hospital Hyderabad. Relatives of the patient alleged that he died due to doctors’ negligence.

Additional Medical Superintendent Dr Saleem Raza Memon, Additional Medical Superintendent Dr Mateen, Surgeon Razzaq Shamim and Associate Professor (Medicine) Dr Sohail Almani are members of the committee.
