LAHORE, July 5: Former captain Waseem Ahmad on Wednesday too expressed his wish to stage a comeback after retiring two years ago.

"I feel my decision of retirement was taken in haste and I have decided to offer my services to the country again," said Waseem who had quit along with Sohail after Champions Trophy in Lahore in 2004.

Sohail Abbas on Tuesday announced that he was ready to play for Pakistan without any pre-condition.

The pair had left international hockey saying that they wanted to make room for youngsters and would be available for Pakistan but only for major events such as World Cup and Champions Trophy.

Waseem made it clear that his decision had no connection with Sohail’s announcement in which he had expressed his willingness to play for Pakistan again.

“It’s my own decision after considering all the aspects. I think I can still serve the country,” he said at a press conference.

The former captain said he was ready to appear in trials for this month’s Champions Trophy.

"I am ready to prove my form and fitness to get a place in the squad and will try to justify my selection if Pakistan Hockey Federation shows confidence in me," Waseem said.

Waseem denied that he had expressed his availability as his contract with a Dutch club would expire after one year.

"It is true that my three-year agreement with a Dutch club will end after a year but my decision is only to serve the country and no PHF official persuaded me to play.”
