KARACHI, Jul. 5: Police shot dead a cellphone snatcher on Shahrea Faisal after he had shot a young man who had resisted a cellphone snatching attempt on Wednesday night.

Police said Faisal Haq, in his late 20s, was talking over his cellphone near Masjid-i-Roomi. Two persons on a motorcycle pulled up and tried to snatch his phone. As Faisal resisted, they shot at him and the bullet grazed his head.

As they were fleeing a police party arrived at the spot. An encounter ensued, during which police shot a bandit later identified as Shahzad while his accomplice fled on the motorcycle.

The SHO of the Ferozabad police station said the wounded bandit later died.

He said Faisal, who bled lying on the road, was rushed to the Jinnah Hospital, where he is stated to be stable.

Police seized a pistol and cellphones from the bandit, the SHO said.

KILLED: A woman was killed allegedly by her son in Pirabad on Wednesday.

Police said Dil Farosh Begum, 50, was stabbed to death by her son Mohammad Jan over the marriage proposal of his sister.

Police said his mother wanted to marry off his sister against his wish as he (Muhammad Jan) wanted her sister to marry an acquaintance of his.

Police said that following the incident the young man escaped.

The woman was rushed to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police said Murtaza reportedly committed suicide when his wife left him after a dispute.

Police sent the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for post-mortem examination.
