Beirut has conveyed its positions to mediators regarding security arrangements with Israel, an official Lebanese source tells Al Jazeera on condition of anonymity.

The source says a draft declaration of intent with Israel is being studied under US auspices and has not yet reached its conclusion, adding that Lebanon wants to activate the UN Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) to monitor Israeli ceasefire violations.

Additionally, the Lebanese government has rejected the use of the term “disarmament” when it comes to Hezbollah, with Beirut wanting to form a Lebanese-American fact-finding committee to monitor the army’s implementation of its commitments.

“The security track that resulted from the negotiations with Israel is a purely technical one,” the source adds. “No brigade will be formed within the Lebanese army dedicated to restricting Hezbollah’s weapons.”

The source has called Speaker of the Parliament Nabih Berri “a statesman” and notes that his position within the Shia community should be respected.
