THIS is with reference to the report ‘Govt orders cybercrime probe into Cambridge paper leaks’ (May 15). The Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) once again failed to keep the integrity of examination machinery intact, and the AS level Mathematics paper-1 appeared on social media hours before the exam got underway. While the government plans to conduct a cybercrime probe and the CAIE has already started its own investigations, the main question remains unanswered: why do hardworking students always suffer because of CAIE’s repeated failures?

The CAIE has stated that it is “aware of news about a reported leak”, that such reports are “investigated thoroughly”, and that more information will be given to schools in due course of time. This is the usual procedure, a procedure that protects the exam system more than it protects the students. On their part, the affected students are left to languish in a state of worry and confusion.

As a parent, I watched my child study for months without any break. My child prepared for exams honestly and with dedication. The CAIE promises fairness and merit, but that promise is not honoured by it. It must think again, and come clean on the matter. It must tell the public what went wrong. It must put students first, not its own convenience. Offering a free retake is not enough when it destroys the whole study plan for the rest of the year. The trust in the CAIE is very low right now. I ask the board to act with honesty and care. Give us a fair answer. It should not make the students pay for its mistake.
