KARACHI: The city authorities have decided to register FIRs and arrest those found dumping sacrificial animal offal on streets and open spaces during Eidul Azha.

Officials said that the decision was taken at a meeting, chaired by Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, who also directed the formation of vigilance committees in each district of the city.

The meeting was attended among others by Additional Commissioner I Ghulam Mehdi Shah, Managing Director of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) Tariq Nizamani and Assistant Commissioner Karachi Headquarters Rabia Syed with all deputy commissioners present via video link.

Municipal commissioners of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and town municipal administrations (TMAs) and officers from SSWMB and cantonment boards also attended the meeting.

Vigilance committees headed by ACs to monitor cleanliness in all districts

It was decided that to enforce the plan, all deputy commissioners would form vigilance committees at the sub-divisional level in their districts, headed by assistant commissioners.

Each committee would include a representative from the TMA, KMC, or Cantonment Board, and a representative from the SSWMB.

The officials said that committees would monitor cleanliness arrangements, ensure timely lifting of offal, and prevent dumping and tearing open of offal on roads.

They said once Section 144 was imposed, the committees would be authorised to take legal action and register FIRs against violators.

Speaking to Dawn, the commissioner said that the district administration, TMAs and the SSWMB had been directed to make coordinated efforts to ensure cleanliness and efficient offal removal and disposal during the religious festival.

He said that the DCs had also been directed to lead the effort and guide municipal agencies to make the city’s offal collection and disposal system effective.

A complaint desk will be set up in the Commissioner Karachi Office for immediate redressal, with citizens able to lodge complaints on Rescue 1299.

The commissioner also directed the DCs to submit daily reports on offal collection in their districts to the commissioner office throughout all three days of Eidul Azha.
