The US Central Command said three aircraft carriers are operating in the Middle East “for the first time in decades”.
The aircraft carriers have a complement of more than 15,000 sailors and Marines and more than 200 aircraft.
The last time the US Navy deployed multiple aircraft carriers in the region was during the Iraq invasion of 2003.
