SANGHAR, June 30: A man, detained for involvement in a case of motorbike theft, was killed while trying to escape after killing a policeman in the Jhol police station on Thursday.

Police had arrested Mukhtiar Mallah three days ago while tryiing to hijack the motorcycle of Taj Keerio.

He was detained at the Jhol police station while his accomplices had escaped.

The accused requested duty guard Ghulam Mohammad Saqi to unlock his handcuff and shackles as he wanted to go for a call of nature.

The policeman unlocked his one hand and foot while placing his official rifle on the table.

The accused picked up the rifle and shot dead head constable Dawood Kaloi.

He took the official rifle and about 200 rounds and drove away on a motorcycle.

When the accused reached near Ansari chowk, the motorcycle stopped due to some fault.

He started indiscriminate firing and hijacked another motorcycle and drove away towards Gurang Bungalow.

The police chased the accused in a mobile and killed him in an encounter. Villagers, who were present on the spot, said that when the robber saw that he was surrounded by all sides and there was no way to escape, he committed suicide.

Police seized looted rifle and motorcycle.

It may be mentioned that the building of the Jhol police station was under construction and make-shift arrangements had been made for lock-up.
