KARACHI: Severely criticising the university administration over its persistent failure to pay their dues, teachers at Karachi University (KU) have warned of boycotting the May 5 semester exam if their demands were not met.

The general body meeting of Karachi University Teachers’ Society (Kuts) was organised on Tuesday against the backdrop of employees’ growing concerns over non-payment of their long-standing dues and allowances.

Most teachers held the administration responsible for the university’s financial woes, stating that its indifference towards employees’ plight had worsened the situation.

The teachers, they said, were deprived of their dues, including those related to evening classes, MPhil/PhD allowances, house ceiling allowance as well as leave encashment, at a time when there was an increase in the prices of daily commodities on a daily basis.

The continued financial crunch, they said, had also severely affected the quality of academic activities, resulting in the complete suspension of dean research grants for the last three years.

It was decided that Kuts would soon release a White Paper on administrative financial irregularities.

The teachers also shared concern over administrative failure in the complete restoration of in-person classes as had already been done by other universities in the province.

“The teachers unanimously demanded that the university administration immediately address their concerns.

“They decided to observe a black day and hold a protest on April 30. The meeting also decided that if the administration failed to act, the teachers will boycott semester exams set to held on May 5,” a press statement released by Kuts reads.
