The IRGC have opened fire on a container ship after it “ignored repeated warnings, causing significant damage to the vessel”, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) says.
The incident took place 15 nautical miles northeast of Oman at 3:55am UTC (8:55am PKT).
“The master of a container ship reported that the vessel was approached by 1 IRGC gunboat, no VHF (very high frequency) challenge that then fired upon the vessel, which has caused heavy damage to the bridge,” the UKMTO said.
“No fires or environmental impact reported. All crew reported safe.”
