MITHI, June 29: The Tharparkar district council has unanimously passed the budget of Rs1,879.48 million for fiscal 2006-07. Earlier, speaking here on Thursday, the second day of the budget session, member Guman Singh Sodho said the district government should be given credit for preparing a comprehensive budget with a Rs91.43 million saving, besides Rs1,788.050 million annual expenditure.

He urged that adequate allocations be earmarked in the district budget for Barani belt that was frequently hit by drought and other calamities, leading to mass migration, shortage of food and forage.

The member suggested that funds be earmarked for fair of legendary Thari woman “Marvi” and the district government should have funds in budget to give stipends to Thari vocalists, artists and literary-minded people.

Member Kirshanlal Rathi pointed out that it would be in fitness of things if the government would give priority to provide adequate funds to the nazims of union councils for welfare works to strengthen the local government system.
