RAWALPINDI, June 28: Former Davis Cup captain Hameedul Haq moved into the men's singles semifinals of the first Shalimar Club Open tennis championship with a hard-fought win over Ali Abdullah on Wednesday.
Hameed, the No. 2 seed faced stiff opposition against a player who was on the gold-winning team of Bharia University in the Inter-University Tennis Championship.
Ali was 5-3 up in the first set and led 30 love before the experienced Hameed roared back to take it 7-5 and then went on to land the second set 6-2 in searing heat.
In Thursday's semifinals, Hameed will play his younger brother Saeedul Haq, a 6-1, 6-2 winner against Usman Khalil.
In the juniors under-17 quarterfinals, top seed Sadanul Haq stayed on course with an 8-2 defeat of Usman Malik.
The talented Abid Ali picked up an 8-5 win over Nasir Mahmood while Asif Ali Khan and Talha Dar also won their respective matches.
Sadan also checked into the semifinals of the boys' under-15 category with a 8-1 knockout of Ahmed Chaudhry.
Bilal Mushtaq upset third seed Salman Shahid 8-3 and Jibranul Haq scored a difficult 8-6 win over Farhad Ali Raja.
The under-15s also witnessed another upset, Badarul Islam edging sixth seed Salaar Ahmed 8-6.
Meanwhile top seed Jibran swept into the semifinals of the under-13s beating Salman bin Salim 8-3.
Third seed Ahmed Chaudhry also went through beating Ahad Amir 8-1 while Kashanul Haq advanced by defeating Muhammad Waleed.
