KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) have agreed to jointly plan and execute all ongoing and upcoming development schemes to ensure sustainable urban development, eliminate duplication of work and improve infrastructure planning across the city.

“From now onwards, no development scheme will be executed without prior joint planning and coordination between KMC and KWSC,” Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab told a meeting on Tuesday.

He said that the new approach would not only prevent the waste of public resources but also ensure that city infrastructure was developed in a durable and systematic manner.

He emphasised that numerous complaints had been received from citizens regarding the deterioration of infrastructure caused by a lack of coordination between departments.

He stated that such challenges must be addressed through clear and comprehensive guidelines to ensure efficiency, quality and long-term sustainability in all development initiatives.

According to a statement, the mayor instructed officials concerned that all ongoing projects must be carried out in close collaboration between both organisations to maintain quality standards and deliver lasting benefits to the citizens of Karachi.

Highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability, Mayor Wahab noted that KMC has already engaged a third-party consultant to independently monitor and evaluate the quality of work across major projects.

He stressed that major development schemes must not be compromised due to minor or unplanned utility works.

The meeting was attended by Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jaffar, KWSC CEO and COO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui and Asadullah Khan, Financial Adviser Gulzar Abro and others.
