LANDI KOTAL, June 27: Khyber Agency Political Agent Dr Tashfeen has said that no development projects will be implemented in areas where poppy is cultivated and more compensation will not be paid to cultivators of the banned crop in the agency, especially in Bara tehsil.

He was speaking after the administration put on fire huge quantity of seized narcotics and smashed hundreds of liquor bottles in Shah Kas-Jamrud to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse on Tuesday.

He said blackmailing the government in the name of development as a substitute to poppy cultivation would no more be tolerated.

He alleged that tribal elders had cheated the government by pocketing huge amounts of developmental funds in the name of poppy eradication.

He said international donations for poppy eradication were not meant for providing an alternative to poppy growers and in future the cultivation of the banned crop would affect the allocation of development funds for the areas concerned.

He said the country was committed under international obligations to wipe out poppy cultivation from the tribal areas.

He appealed to tribal people to assist the country in fulfilling its commitment.

The authorities destroyed 5,161kg of charas, 285kg of opium, 94kg of heroin, 820kg of ammonium chloride, 211 bags of activated carbon, 1,047 bottles of liquor and 5,405 cans of beer seized by the Khasadar Force, Khyber Rifles and Mehsood Scouts during 2005-6.
