KARACHI, June 27: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal MPAs on Tuesday feared widespread power related violence in the city if the unannounced loadshedding continued. In a joint statement, MMA MPAs Nasrullah Shaji and Hameedullah advocate said that despite claims to end power outages, the situation had aggravated and power outages had also disrupted water supply to the city of more the 13 million people, resulting in double jeopardy for the city dwellers as well as the industry.

The MMA issued this warning after night-long power disruptions in various localities of Karachi on Monday night.

They noted that the authorities had miserably failed in addressing the power generation and distribution problems because the utility had hardly invested in their upkeep and modernization to meet the growing demand. Karachiites, they said, were still suffering from power outages of several hours every day despite pronouncements by the concerned authorities that loadshedding would be finished soon.

They asked how many KESC engineers had been suspended for disruption on power supply.

They pointed out that harassed and disappointed people were taking to the street and power riots might spread to all parts of the city.

They alleged that those who claimed to be the custodians of the people of Karachi had made their life miserable. They also slammed the government for forcing closure of business after 8pm.
